Street Boys by Lorenzo Carcaterra
Naples, Italy, during 4 fateful days in the Autumn of 1943. The only people left in the shattered, bombed-out city are lost, abandoned children whose sole goal is to survive another day. None could imagine that they would become fearless fighters and the unlikeliest heroes of World War II.
It is late September. The war in Europe is almost won. Italy is leaderless; Mussolini already arrested by the anti-facsits. The German army has evacuated the city of Naples. Adults, entire families, have been marched off to work in camps or simply to their deaths. Now, the German army is moving towards Naples to finish the job. Their chilling instructions are: if the city can't belong to Hitler, it will belong to no one.
No one but children. Children who have been orphaned or hidden by parents in a last, defiant gesture against the Nazis. Children, some as young as ten years old, armed with just a handful of guns, unexploded bombs and their own ingenuity. Children who are determined to take on the advancing enemy and save the city - or die trying.
As you notice I haven't been putting up any quotes or blurbs and that is simply because I haven't been to the library or borrowing any books!
"Are you proud of me?"
-Grin-
But the nerd in me just can't hold out. While waiting for Ms Metal-and-Ceramic-teeth's "royal" arrival and wondering around Lot1, I stumbled upon the magical words like when Ali Baba's 40 thieves set their eyes on what lies behind "Open Sesame".
*~Choa Chu Kang Community Library~*It was calling out to me. Beckoning me. Enticing me. And the rest they always say, is history. I walked out of there with a wide beam across my face, like a child walking out of a candy shop with a full load.
Back to the main point, last Saturday was - Last Freedom Day. Right before I totally weaned myself of leisure. Well, uh, except for my books and tomorrow [heheh]. Finally managed to catch a movie after the price hike, again.
What's up with that? Hope there'll be a significant total revenue decrease that they will lower the even higher price to high price. Sigh.
Getting back, my baby and I watched "Guess Who". Thanks to his quick action we managed to get tickets at Cineleisure. One thing I'll never quite get is Singaporean's reaction to movie moments, rather non-humorous movie moments. For example Ms Congeniality 2, Guess Who and every other movie. When the actors and actresses says something really funny and witty, only I and a few others' chuckles could be heard. However, when these Hollywood people do stupid things like slip and fall or choke on something, there's an uproar from the entire theatre.
-raised eyebrows-
I know it's human nature to laugh when someone makes a fool out of themselves, friend or foe, commoner or Hollywood. But what about those funny things they said? If you actually can actually can hear or understand, it is funny,
you know.
Moving along, we went Marina South to have steamboat.
Aahhh.... Life is good.
I love food, hard to tell, I know but I REALLY snack alot. So Stop calling me "skinny" coz that is the last thing I am (wait till you see the deposits in the most unsightly places).
But nothing can get more unsightly than...
*drum roll*
Ass crack revealers.
Especially when you are having great bbq beef and buttered prawns, then out of the corner of your eye, there was just too much flesh below the waist from back view and the very distinguishing
loooong dark line going down south. For the love of God and the Holy Trinity, do something about it. Wear a belt, a long shirt, stuff tissue, whatever, but do something. What are you trying to tell us?
"I'm too poor to afford underwear?""Peekaboo! Now you see it, now you do again."I've had enough.
Then we went to the arcade to work those calories off. Played daytona and raced with strangers, unintentionally, well, at least I show those guys who always ride their mouth off, making condescending remarks about the "weaker sex". I was first for most of the race, out of the 5 of us, unfortunately at the last minute I was overtaken and came in 3rd. Nonetheless, a rather loud message to those noisy racers...

:)
You need the practice.
One last thing, to that weird stalker who keeps following us around the arcade just to get a chance to compete with us.
Get a life.

I'm sure many of you guys remember, or unfortunately had first hand experience of the infamous eyebrow plucker,
Singapore Idol contestant, Ch8's
Top Fun participant.
Steven LimI'm not sure about the lot of you, but the mention of his name sends
shivers down my delicate spine(
very unfortunately for the
Growing Up actor.), it makes you wanna stop and wonder.
"What is this freak thinking?? I mean, seriously, surely no normal person would in the right mind subject himself, his supposed girlfriend(refer to link just below) or an innocent boy(one of my many upclose brushes with this goon) into his crazy antics." http://pigsgettofly.blogspot.com/2005/02/emotional-blackmail-campaign_24.htmlMy very first awareness of this guy was in JC1(2001), when he was still just an eyebrow plucker(or rather, mower). My poor friend, Roanna Zhang came to school one day with nothing but 2 "G-Tec"-pen thin eyebrows! Being her, she whined none stop about this idiot who forced her into a corner outside CK Tangs and started tugging at her brows without so much as allowing her to protest.
I don't know whether to pity her or the guys for having to be subjected to an entire day of Roanna's whine. Haha. (Sorry babe!) Naturally, we girls are definitely more aware of him and were ready to fight him off if we have to.
Fortunately enough, I only bumped into him once since while he was busy terrorising other ignorant victims.
How
distasteful.
His fame grew, of course, with his famous strip acts on
Singapore Idol and the chinese variety show. Moniker variations starts popping up. He now even has his own website.
http://www.stevenlim.net/Gross.Once I saw this boy, probably no older than 14 wearing a sandwich board at the waiting area outside Orchard Mrt. And I was thinking.
"Isn't the minimum age for working 16? Is he aware of the labour law?"And as I walk right pass this boy,
"Sick Man Strikes Again" I thought walking away.
Sigh.
I really hope this boy is paid well or at least is doing it out of his own free will, unlike that poor girl.
My most recent brushes (yep, I still see him more than once) was months back. I was passing his strike zone, Tangs when, much to the dismay of my friend and I, this nasty-face figure walked up to us.
Thank god for my pretty fiesty friend, she brushed him right off when he started to introduce himself
(Way to Go, Girl!), and we went along our way. Mind you, that happened TWICE.
Looking at his friendster profile, I'm glad many out there share the same sentiments as me about him.
http://www.friendster.com/user.php?uid=8304812I am so sick of this icky thing. He is a

My current read
Full Blast by Janet Evanovich & Charlotte Hughes
South Carolina.
Lately, a heat wave's spiked the Mercury - and everyone's sex drive! These days, when newspaper editor Jamie Swift runs into mysterious millionaire Max Holt, it's all she can do not to tear his clothes off - and the feeling is mutual. But trouble seems to follow Max like moths to a flame, and Jamie suspects he's all wrong for her. Meanwhile, the lingerie shopis having a sale on edible underwear, while the bakery's selling aphrodisiac-laced brownies and x-rated birthday cakes. Even Jamie's dog, Fleas, is dodging passes from the amorous French poodle next door! But when someone starts bumping off some of the town's more annoying citizens, all clues lead straight to the new personals section in Jamie's newspaper. Pretty soon, things are getting hot and heavy, as Max and Jamie start uncovering secrets - and undressing each other...
Before you start thinking further than you should, I've got my reasons for reading this book.
1. It's my favourite author, Janet, that is cuz she wrote the Stephanie Plum series, I even got my sister to like it, 'nuff said.
2. I like these light-hearted mystery solving adventure stories, with a touch or quirkiness like bimbotic hairdresser Bubbles, and humour-inclined Jamie Swift and Stephanie Plum, but then again, they are from the same author.
3. There's always a super crazy off-the-edge character - Stephanie got her grandmother who wants to be exactly like her, dressing and all. Not a pretty sight. Bubbles got her mother and her GI Jane friend, Genevieve. Unimaginable. And Jamie's got her secretary, an old lady hired by her dad last time to help her, intimidates Jamie and carries a gun. Absolutely hilarious.
4. Come on, where can you find a story as twisted as this? Aphrodisiac-laced brownies and edible underwear without having to worry that the author will go out of hand(forgive the pun.) and explicitly letting her characters dance in the light fandango(complients of Bubbles ;p).

Life so totally suck! You try your very best and is performing to the best of your abilities. But all life can do for you is turn around and gives you a really tight slap across the face, a hard punch in the nose and say "you are just not good enough."
Fine! If you don't know how to appreciate it then I would not wanna disappoint you, would I? I will be the terrrible, horrible, incorrigible person you say I am.
I'm tired of trying and letting it go unseen.
If the World Crashes Down - Enrique Iglesias
12:23 PM
You make me strong, you make me weak
You lift me off my feet
You give me hope
When all my dreams seem like they're out of reach
Yeah, yeah
You make me understand the way the perfect love should be
You take me to a place so high
I never wanna leave
Sometimes I think of all the things I should have said
I hope it's not too late
I wanna make you understand
Oh, yeah
If the world crashes down over me
I know that my life is complete
Cuz I've held you in my arms all night
Cuz I can't imagine life without you by my side
You whisper in my ear the words
Just hold me close tonight
(Hold me tonight)
And when the pain is holding me
Your touch just sets me free
Sometimes I think of all the things I should have said
I hope it's not too late
I wanna make you understand
Oh, yeah
If the world crashes down over me
I know that my life is complete
Cuz I've held you in my arms all night
Cuz I can't imagine life without you by my side
If the world crashes down over me
(Over me)
I know that my life is complete
(Is complete)
Cuz I've held you in my arms all night
Cuz I can't imagine life without you by my sideThis song is just for
me, myself and I only!!

My current read
Bubbles A Broad by Sarah StrohmeyerAfter a catfight at a stuffy historical society meeting nearly kills her career, Bubbles is given just one week to prove her worth to her editors at the News-Times and earn a real job there by cracking her biggest story ever: finding out who really murdered Carol Weaver's steel-executive husband with cyanide-tipped fingermails. More than Carol's own jail sentence for the homocide is riding on Bubbles's investigation. Also at stake is the possibilty of corruption in the steel industry at the highest level.Nothing will deter Bubbles this time! Not trying to drive eith a cell phone in one hand and a mascara wand in the other. Not the shenanigans of mother Lulu, the pressure of getting daughter Jane into a good college (maybe Princeton, maybe Two Guys Community), or the roadblocks posed by Jane's ever-clueless boyfriend G. Not even hunky gonzo photojournalist Steve Stiletto, can seriously distract her from her investigation. Gutsy, intuitive, and delivering her her best one-liners along with her latest beauty recipes, Bubbles is behnd the wheel and a wild ride awaits. It's all in a day's work for a broad like Bubbles. This, you can tell is one of those no-brainer easy read for me.
The good news is -
I've finally gotten my ass down to studying! -Cheers- So that explains my need for a brainless read.
To
releef stress
lah!
-snigger-
Of course, this is not the only book I have read after DVC (Da Vinci Code, for those who haven't been following my blog religiously enough). I've pored through Uptown Girl,
another modern romantic novel, not so bad
and Virgin Suicides
deep, intense.And now, this.
Life is boring. It's all about books, notes, econs, af, maths, stats now.
Bore.
Bore.
Bore. Can't wait for it all to be over and boy, can u watch me

Sigh.
I miss my baby! -wail-
I hate having to control myself for the sake of exams.
Exams.
Exams. Exams."Can't meet you today, baby. Gotta study.""Sorry lah
